ABOUT Julia

Julia Kent's playfully dark prints, paintings, drawings and films originate in a fascination with the abject residues and remains of life and living; whether human hair or teeth, scuffs or marks left by the artist's hand, or objects that have long served their purpose, Kent's art deals with the melancholia that comes with living alongside the existential awareness that nothing lasts forever, and the way things that once were leave a smudge, residue or remains of its previous being. Alongside hints of nostalgia, loss, and mourning comes a triumphant yet understated gallows humour; subtle puns, and macabre playfulness almost suggest the presence of the artist's own celebratory version of 'the day of the dead'. These themes are expertly captured in the recurring and subtly mirrored motifs of teeth and crowns, the former suggesting the biting truth of ageing, wear, decay and loss and the latter crowning a defiant trickster deity who can look existence in the eye, grimace and smile at the disappointment of it all.
